What if your college told you that being Gay was against the law? Mark Manning returns to host The Tenth Voice with special guest Kristie Stremel myspace.com/kristiestremelmusic who shares her experiences as a student at Garden City Community College, in Garden
City, Kansas.
On January 30, 2008, Finney County Attorney John Wheeler Jr., was invited to Garden City Community College to provide education regarding sexual offenses and their prevention. Over 100 students attended the presentation. During his explanation of Kansas sodomy laws, Mr. Wheeler unequivocally stated: “Homosexuality is a crime in Kansas.” His Power Point presentation emphasized that such sex is "UNLAWFUL in Kansas."
Kristie wondered if the attorney was aware that The US Supreme Court had struck down a Texas Law (Lawrence Vs. Texas) in 2003, that is identical to the Kansas Law. But Mr. Wheeler stands by his words and says the law is still on the books in Kansas.
Attorney Lisa Brunner, of Husch & Eppenberger, LLC, Joins us to discuss this situation and how Mr. Wheeler's remarks are misleading and cause unnecessary distress to LGBT students at Garden City Community College. Lisa was named the 2007 Advocate of the Year award
from the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri because of her work to help advance civil liberties.

Hi Danny!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you know I have been following the stuff you have been writing about Kristie and all that she has been actively fighting for. I think she is an amazing person for standing up and speaking out to make a difference for what she believes in. I listened to the radio segment and although I don't know Kristie personally I could sense her passion in her words. She is a very strong person to speak up. I have struggled all my life with being a bisexual person. I too have had to hear ignorant comments from people but unlike Kristie, I have never felt directly threatened by any of it. Unfortunately so many LGBT people do feel the threats and it really takes someone like Kristie to stand up and be heard. I hope she is able to make the difference on on her school campus that she is striving so hard to achieve. Maybe if you speak to her, you could pass along my thoughts and admiration for all that she is doing. And thank you Danny for covering this story. It definately needs to be brought to the attention of the so many people who are living and speaking thoughts of hatred toward LGBT people. It's time for people to learn tolerance and acceptance for the difference in people. If we were all alike in our ways, life would be pretty mundane. It's the diversity that keeps the world going!
Thanks
Jenny
Thanks, Jenny! I'll pass your thoughts along. I'd like to do something here on the equal rights coalition of southwestern Kansas. It sounds like a great group, and it's been a great help to her.
